Elementary Academics
Tacoma Baptist Elementary and New Hope Elementary are intentional in our commitment to provide a strong academic program for our students. Foundational to this is a scope and sequence designed to present appropriate material at each grade level, address learning standards, and prevent learning gaps. Curriculum guides developed to identify and meet specific learning objectives lead teachers as they plan instructional units so that instruction is provided based on student need rather than being driven by a particular textbook.
Currently A Beka provides most of the learning materials used in the elementary with teachers providing supplemental components to enhance student learning. In the third through sixth grade, Bob Jones University Press material is used for language arts and spelling as the result of a recent review of the language arts curriculum and determination that BJU materials would best meet the needs of our students in these grades.
To help in assessing our students’ academic progress and in evaluatng the elementary school’s performance in light of national norms, Tacoma Baptist Elementary and New Hope Elementary students take the Stanford Achievement Test each year. Results are provided to parents, usually in the final report card of the year.
Finally, to ensure students at Tacoma Baptist Elementary and New Hope Elementary receive academic training based on truth, every subject is taught from a Biblical basis and in a manner consistent with God’s Word.
